We are developing a new approach to connecting young New Yorkers, healthier learning environments and sustainability with the interactive Green Schools Green Map!
A new online platform called the Open Green Map is taking shape at OpenGreenMap.org. Soon, it will highlight the New York City schools currently using our Energy & Environment Exploration Modules. These schools are using our hands-on learning environmental modules to engage their students in issues of environmentalism, sustainability communications, community and conservation. On the participatory
Green Schools Green Map, these schools will soon be highlighted as Environmental Education sites throughout New York City.
For each school, there is an overview of their ongoing sustainability and green initiatives, enhanced with students' photos and videos, as well as links to digitized versions (PDF) of their Green Maps. Additionally students can add:
- Impact assessments
- Comments
- Multimedia expressions
The Green Schools Green Map also allows schools to share and learn about each other’s progress. What kinds of curriculum, projects, green practices and building-wide policies are in place? Does the school have a garden, wildlife project, bike club or other program that involves the community? Our aim is to inspire and give insights on sustainability in and outside the classroom.
Why? Nearly 2 million New Yorkers are under 18, yet now, they are left out of most greening efforts and all too often, learn in unhealthy environments. The citywide Green Schools Green Map is designed to help schools share their green learning and progress towards sustainability with students across New York City and the world. Expanding the reach of the Energy & Environment Exploration Modules beyond the classroom, the Green Schools Green Map will give students a great new way to get involved!
