About Green Map System

Visualizing the Global Community Sustainability Movement

Green Maps help people discover, value and protect community environments around the world.

The Powerful Green Map was created by the non-profit organization Green Map System. In addition to creating Green Apple Maps of NYC's environment, our Manhattan office is the global headquarters for a locally led eco-cultural mapping movement.

Cultivating healthier communities, Green Map System shares tools that create dialogue and common understanding of global sustainability issues at the local level. Each Green Map is as unique as the home place it portrays. All utilize global Green Map Icons to inspire and foster citizen participation and extend the desire for green living in urban and rural hometowns worldwide.

In its first decade - 1995-2005 - this award-winning energetic movement spread to 46 countries. Over 330 diverse, beautiful printed and digital Green Maps are in use today. Each directly addresses the community's environmental concerns while encouraging discovery and personal involvement in revitalizing local landscapes, choosing lower-impact lifestyle choices and supporting the spreading of successful eco-cultural initiatives.

Universally understood Green Maps reveal a vibrant sense of place in mega-cities and small towns, watersheds and neighborhoods.

The Powerful Green Map was the 225th Green Map published worldwide, and the fifth citywide edition of the Green Apple Map. With its theme of energy, it sparked a new genre in our movement. All maps are power tools. The Green Map making process is scalable and offers citizens a genuine opportunity to help build stronger, greener, more culturally aware communities. All rely on Green Map's capacity-building resources, technical assistance, outreach and the exciting models in the global archive, but local knowledge, resourcefulness and collaboration are indispensable to generating an authentic, compelling interpretation of home.

Green Map's second decade involves you - become a Green Mapmaker or help support this non-profit 501c3 organization's global effort. Help people visualize the familiar so they can define anew their relationship with the place they call home.
