An Urban Ecotourism Guide

About this Map

This Green Mapmaking process was part of a university thesis "Urban ecotourism proposal towards the revitalization of public spaces by means of usage, valuation and conservation. Case of study: New York's Chinatown". This research was made by Carlos Martinez, our Office Manager and Latin American Liaison in New York City.

This map invites residents and tourists to explore and discover one the most vibrant asian neighborhoods of the western hemisphere from a different perspective.

Some of the aspects addressed in this map are: mobility (bike lanes, pedestrian zones, bike racks, bridges, plazas, mass transit stations, etc), tourist info (kiosks, museums, etc.), special places (parks, community gardens, public art, churches, etc.) and many more with special consideration on public spaces.

Travelogue

This Chinatown travelogue invites you to explore only its Historic Core.

Walk, skate or bike

If you are walking don't forget to take advantage of the public transit, plazas, parks, sidewalks and pedestrian zones to discover this unique urban and cultural landscape. If you are riding your bike use the bike racks and the municipal parking sites.

Follow the directions and enjoy this vibrant neighborhood. Things change all the time and you must take responsibility for safety! Feel free to take any detour, explore and discover new things and share it with us apple@greenmap.org.

Chinatown's Historic Core

The streets that are delineating this area are: Baxter Street, Canal Street, Thomas Paine Street and Bowery. When you enter to this unique area you will find more than 15 Cultural Associations, Historic Landmarks like the Church of the Transfiguration and the Edward Money House, and other buildings that are part of the historical and cultural fabric of Chinatown's urban landscape.

If you are coming from the west side (SoHo and Tribeca)

Start at Canal Street and you will hit the Chinatown Info Kiosk with lots of traditional and commercial activities. Take sometime to enjoy the other side of this neighborhood in a sustainable way.

If you are coming from the east side (Lower East Side, East Village and Brooklyn)

Start at Delancey Street and make a left in Mulberry Street. You will be passing Little Italy and after crossing Canal Street you will find the Columbus Park and its pavilion.

If you are coming from the north (NoHo)

Start at E. Houston between Chrystie Street and Forsythe Street and enjoy the Sara Delano Roosevelt Park along with the M'finda Kalunga Community Garden. In Canal Street you will find the Manhattan Bridge and its famous Arch and make a right and you will find the Chinatown Info Kiosk.
