In 2009, we are developing a new approach to connecting young New Yorkers, healthier learning environments and sustainability with the interactive Green Teens Open Green Map!
A new online platform called the Open Green Map is taking shape at OpenGreenMap.org. Soon, it will highlight the New York City schools and organizations currently using our Energy & Environment Exploration Modules. Educators and youth group leaders are using these 'EEE Modules' to engage students in hands-on learning in environmentalism, sustainability communications, community participation and conservation. Download and share a flyer here!
Soon, on the online Green Teens Open Green Map, each participating school or organization can add a profile and be highlighted as an Environmental Education site. There will be an overview of the school's/org's ongoing sustainability and green initiatives, enhanced with students' photos and videos, as well as links to digitized versions (PDFs) of their Green Maps, especially those created with the EEE Modules. Additionally students can add:
- Impact assessments
- Comments and updates in any language
- Multimedia expressions
The Green Teens Open Green Map encourages schools/clubs to share and learn about one another's progress. What kinds of curriculum, projects, green practices and building-wide policies are in place? Does the school have a garden, wildlife project, bike club or other program that involves the community? Our aim is to inspire and give insights on sustainability in and outside the classroom. The charting will start in New York City and will go global shortly thereafter!
Why? Nearly 2 million New Yorkers are under 18, yet they are left out of most greening efforts and all too often, learn in unhealthy environments. The Green Teens Open Green Map is designed to help schools share their green learning and progress towards sustainability. Expanding the reach of the EEE Modules beyond the classroom, the Green Teens Open Green Map will give students a great new way to get involved!
You can find out more about our Energy & Environment Exploration Modules for NYC (download the global version at GreenMap.org/youth. Used on their own, in school or out, they help youth assess and chart everyday green living options and much more! Watch the Open Green Map video below!
