Conservation Tips

Share your effective ways of saving energy and resources at home, work, school, on the move, etc. Living in NYC demands that we be innovative & efficient, so creative tips are especially welcome.

3-22-06: Hoping that New Yorkers know the high cost of flying - it's one of the costiest choices an individual can make, in terms of Greenhouse Gases. Thanks to anonymous for this tip, we suggest vacationing close to home, using another means to get there. If you must fly, fly climate neutral (see Better World Club's travel cool program) and find more info on the map.

9-15-06: Batteries contain mercury, cadmium, acid and heavy metals. These toxics may leech into our air and waterways, if batteries are not properly recycled. Many battery components, including plastic casing, can be recovered and reused. Recycling can be as easy as dropping off your old battery at a participating retail store. To find a recycling center near you, simply imput your zip code here: Earth 911 An even greener alternative is switching to rechargable batteries. Green Batteries is a rechargable battery outlet online.

9-15-06: An easy way to save energy around the house is to unplug chargers (cell phones, mp3 players, rechargable batteries, etc.) when they are not in use. Only 5% of the power drawn by a cell phone charger is used to charge the phone. The other 95% is wasted when it is left plugged into the wall.

9-15-06: Use power strips to turn off TVs and stereos to save the energy equivalent of a 100-watt light bulb that’s always on. Or you can invest in the Smart Strip Power Strip It monitors power consumption and shuts off power when a device is turned off; pays for itself in energy savings in 2 months ($30.95).
